About Diwali
Diwali, the festival of lights, runs for five days across autumn and is marked by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists in India and around the world. Families clean their homes, set rows of small clay lamps called diyas along walls and windowsills, and press colored powder, rice or flower petals into rangoli patterns at the doorway. Marigold garlands, sweets shared with neighbors, new clothes and visits to the temple all belong to the season.
Reach for this sheet in late October or November, when a classroom or family is learning what the lamps in the window actually mean.
