About Groundhog Day

Every February 2, a crowd gathers before sunrise in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to watch a groundhog leave its burrow. Tradition says a visible shadow means six more weeks of winter, while a cloudy morning promises an early spring. The groundhog, also called a woodchuck, is a marmot: a stout burrowing rodent that truly does hibernate through the cold months. The custom traces back to European midwinter weather lore that German settlers carried to Pennsylvania.

Reach for this sheet in late January or early February, when classes are tracking seasons, animal hibernation, or the difference between folklore and a real forecast.
