About Hanukkah

Hanukkah marks the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after the Maccabees reclaimed it. The holiday runs eight nights, and the menorah holds nine candles: eight for the nights plus the shamash, the helper candle used to light the others. Because oil sits at the center of the story, families fry latkes and sufganiyot, the jelly-filled doughnuts. The grid below gathers the dreidel, the gelt, the flame and the blessing that fill those evenings.
