About Insects
Insects wear their skeletons on the outside and share one body plan: head, thorax, abdomen, six legs. Beetles alone account for more named species than any other group of animals, which is why the weevil and the ladybug on this list are cousins. Some entries here signal with light or sound. Fireflies flash chemical signals after dusk, crickets rub their wings together, and cicadas use drum-like organs on the abdomen. Others, like the aphid, feed quietly on plant sap.
Reach for this sheet during an elementary or middle school unit on insect anatomy, life cycles, or garden ecology.
