About Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa runs from December 26 through January 1, seven days honoring African American community and heritage. Maulana Karenga created the celebration in 1966, drawing its vocabulary from Swahili: the name comes from a phrase meaning first fruits, and the harvest theme shapes the symbols. A kinara holds seven candles, one lit each evening, and families set out crops, a woven mat, and an ear of corn. Many of the words hidden here name those objects.
Reach for this sheet in late December, when a classroom or family is learning what the kinara, the mkeka, and the seven principles stand for.
