About Labor Day

Labor Day falls on the first Monday of September and honors the people whose work built the country's roads, bridges, factories and classrooms. Congress made it a federal holiday in 1894, after decades of campaigning by trade unions for shorter days and safer conditions. Early observances centered on a street parade of workers carrying banners naming their trade, followed by a picnic for families. Canada marks its own Labour Day on the same Monday.

Reach for this in late August or early September, when a class or family is talking about work, unions and the last long weekend of summer.
