About Memorial Day
Memorial Day honors members of the United States armed forces who died in service. It grew out of Decoration Day, when communities gathered after the Civil War to lay flowers on soldiers' graves, and it now falls on the last Monday in May. Cemeteries fill with small flags, buglers play Taps, and the national flag flies at half-staff until noon. Backyard barbecues share the weekend with wreath-layings and parades, a mix of rest and remembrance the holiday has carried for well over a century.
Reach for this page in late May, when a class or a family is talking about why the holiday exists beyond the long weekend.
