About Phonics

Phonics teaches the link between letters and the sounds they stand for, so a reader can work out an unfamiliar word instead of memorizing its shape. English complicates this: two letters often team up for one sound, as in the /sh/ of ship, and the silent E at the end of cake reaches back to change the vowel before it. Terms like phoneme, onset, and digraph give teachers and students precise names for these pieces, which makes tricky spellings easier to talk about.

Reach for this during a reading block or literacy tutoring session, when students are learning the vocabulary that describes how words come apart and go back together.
