About Plants
Plants feed themselves out of thin air and sunlight. Chlorophyll, the pigment that makes leaves green, captures light energy so a plant can build sugars from carbon dioxide and water, releasing oxygen as it works. The rest of the structure supports that job: roots pull in water and minerals, stems carry it upward, leaves spread wide to catch the light. Mosses and ferns manage without flowers or seeds, reproducing by spores instead, while a cactus stores water in a thickened stem.
Reach for this during a unit on plant parts or photosynthesis, or set it out beside a windowsill garden while seedlings are still coming up.
