About Presidents

Forty-five people have held the presidency, and the names hidden here span more than two centuries of that office. Washington set the two-term custom that later became the 22nd Amendment. Jefferson doubled the country's size with the Louisiana Purchase. Lincoln led during the Civil War and signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Truman took office in April 1945, weeks before the war in Europe ended. Kennedy, Reagan, Carter and Obama carry the story into living memory, with terms most families can still discuss firsthand.

Reach for this during a unit on American government or in the week around Presidents' Day, when students are matching names to eras.
