About Rocks and Minerals
Geologists sort rocks by how they form. Basalt and obsidian cooled from magma, obsidian so fast it never grew crystals and broke into glass instead. Limestone, sandstone and shale settled in layers, while heat and pressure squeezed limestone into marble and shale into slate. Minerals are the ingredients: quartz, feldspar and mica are the three you can pick out in a slab of granite. Talc is the softest mineral on the Mohs hardness scale, soft enough to scratch with a fingernail.
A good companion for earth science students working through the rock cycle or sorting a classroom specimen tray.
