Sight words are the high-frequency words readers learn to recognize instantly, without stopping to sound them out. Many of them resist ordinary phonics rules: the EI in FRIEND, the silent L in SHOULD and WOULD, the OU in BECAUSE that sounds nothing like it looks. Because words like THEY, ABOUT and WHICH appear on nearly every page of a beginning reader, quick recognition frees attention for meaning.
