About Spelling
English spelling keeps records of where its words came from: the silent letters in knight and comb once got spoken aloud, and the k in knee stayed on the page long after speakers dropped it. Prefixes and suffixes attach to a root without erasing it, so you can see the parts. Vowels shift, consonants double before an ending, and plurals split into regular and irregular. A dictionary settles disputes; phonics gives you a way to sound out a word you have never met.
Reach for this during a spelling unit or the week before a classroom spelling bee, when students need the vocabulary of spelling itself.
