About Autumn

Autumn begins at the equinox, when day and night run nearly equal and the sun's path drops lower across the sky. Shorter days shut down the chlorophyll in maple leaves, letting yellows and oranges that were there all along finally show. Oaks drop acorns by the thousand, squirrels bury far more than they recover, and geese line up for migration. On the ground, the season turns practical: apples pressed into cider, cranberry bogs flooded for harvest, fields cut into corn mazes.

A seasonal page for teachers and families working through September and October, when the leaves outside the window are doing exactly what the clues describe.
