About Rain

Rain begins high in a cloud, where water droplets collide and merge until they grow too heavy for rising air to hold. What falls next gets its own vocabulary: a drizzle you barely notice, a downpour that overwhelms a gutter in minutes, a monsoon season that reverses wind direction across South Asia and delivers months of a region's water in a single stretch. Too little rain brings drought; too much brings flood. A rainbow appears when sunlight bends through droplets still hanging in the air.

A good pick for an elementary science unit on the water cycle or weather, or for anyone waiting out a storm indoors.
