About Winter
Winter in the Northern Hemisphere begins at the solstice in late December, the shortest day of the year, and the cold deepens for weeks afterward because land and ocean keep releasing stored summer heat. Snowflakes form as water vapor freezes directly into ice crystals around a speck of dust, growing six branches. Bears, chipmunks and woodchucks slow their heartbeats and wait it out. Evergreens keep their needles, shedding snow instead of leaves, and stay green through the darkest months.
