About Summer

Summer in the Northern Hemisphere opens with the solstice around June 21, the day the sun climbs highest and daylight stretches longest. Heat and moisture build afternoon thunderstorms, so thunder often follows a bright morning. Cicadas emerge from underground to sing in the treetops, fireflies flash after dusk to signal to mates, and lifeguards watch swimmers from raised chairs. Sunscreen, shade, and cold water do the real work of getting through a heat wave safely.

Reach for this at the start of a June session or on a hot afternoon when a class or family wants something to do indoors.
