About Bees
A honey bee colony runs on division of labor: a single queen lays the eggs, drones exist to mate with her, and thousands of female workers forage, build wax comb, and guard the entrance. Foragers gather nectar and pollen, and along the way they move pollen between flowers, which is why orchards and melon fields are rented hives each spring. Beekeepers calm a colony with cool smoke before lifting frames from an apiary.
Reach for this in a science unit on pollinators, or before a class visit from a local beekeeper.
