About Dogs

Dogs descend from wolves and have lived alongside people for thousands of years, longer than any other domesticated animal. Selective breeding pushed them to extremes: a Chihuahua and a Great Dane belong to the same species. A dog's nose carries far more scent receptors than yours, which is why detection dogs can locate people under rubble. Much of the vocabulary here comes from that working partnership, from the gear that keeps a dog safe on a walk to the training terms handlers use.

Reach for this at a veterinary waiting room, a 4-H club meeting, or a family table where someone is lobbying hard for a puppy.
