About Dinosaurs
Dinosaurs ruled the Mesozoic Era for roughly 165 million years, far longer than mammals have existed. Paleontologists sort them by diet: a herbivore like Stegosaurus stripped plants, while a carnivore hunted. Much of what anyone knows comes from bones turned to stone, from nests of fossilized eggs, and from insects trapped in amber. The great extinction at the close of the Cretaceous cleared the way for other animals, though birds descend from small feathered theropods and are living dinosaurs today.
Reach for this in an elementary science unit on fossils, or on a rainy afternoon with a young dinosaur enthusiast who already knows how to spell Triceratops.
