About Horses
Horses move through four natural gaits, and three of them appear here: the two-beat trot, the three-beat canter, and the flat-out gallop, in which all four hooves leave the ground at once. A young horse is a foal, an adult female a mare, an adult male a stallion. Riders depend on tack: the saddle, the bridle that carries the bit, and the stirrups that steady the legs. Mustangs run free across the American West.
