About Fall
Fall begins at the equinox, when day and night run nearly equal and the northern hemisphere tilts away from the sun. Shorter days shut down chlorophyll production in leaves, and the yellows and oranges that were there all along finally show through. Cooler nights and the first frost signal the last of the harvest: pumpkins, apples pressed into cider, chestnuts. Birds read the changing light and start moving south, some traveling thousands of miles.
Reach for this in September or October, when a classroom or kitchen table needs a seasonal page that also explains why the leaves turn.
