About Kindergarten

Kindergarten means "children's garden" in German, the name Friedrich Froebel gave the classrooms he opened in the 1800s, where he believed young children learn by handling blocks, singing and playing rather than by sitting still. Much of that idea survives: a modern kindergarten day still moves between circle time, storytime, snack and recess, with paint and scissors as serious tools. Letters and numbers arrive alongside the harder lessons of sharing glue and lining up.
